Overview

Doom warrior is a 1 vs 1 dueling RPG. Initially your goal is to progress through the story-line by unlocking all 5 arenas and defeating the final boss. Once you have completed the main story you can continue the game by becoming ever more powerful, and competing for supremacy with other players in the various leagues.

Combat

Doom Warrior's combat system is fairly simple. Characters can initiate an attack in a given direction by pressing the relevant arrow key. They can also attempt to block an incoming attack by pressing the relevant WASD key. If a character has special abilities available to them, they can use them by pressing the corresponding number key (1-3).

In order to win combat, you must reduce your opponents red life bar to zero. You can damage your opponent either by scoring a successful attack, or by using an aggressive special ability, such as Fireball. Your total amount of Life is determined by your Toughness stat. The amount of damage you deal is determined by a variety of stats such as Strength, Fire, Ice, Lightning etc.

Stabbing attacks (Up) are quick, but deal only a small amount of damage. Left & Right attacks are of average speed and deal an average amount of damage. Overhead attacks (Down) are slow, but deal the most amount of damage.

Each character has a yellow energy bar, which regenerates fairly rapidly. A fixed amount of energy is required to launch an attack based on the character's level. Using a special ability will use all of your currently available energy. The more energy you have at the time of using the ability, the more potent it will be. Your total amount of Energy is determined by your Stamina stat.

Blocking does not cost any energy, and if successful will stop the enemy's attack, preventing them from causing damage to you. You must block upwards to stop an overhead attack, right to stop an attack coming from the right, left to stop an attack coming from the left, and down to stop stabs. Sometimes even blocking correctly will not work, and your block will be broken. The rate a which your blocks are successful is determined by your Blocking stat, and whether your opponent is using a Two-Handed Weapon or not.

Winning a fight will normally give you Gold, Battle Points and Exp.

Mercy and Execution

When winning a fight, a character can choose to either Execute their opponent, or show them Mercy. The choice can often have big implications, so it's important to choose wisely.

Against a player or NPC, this choice will not change the rewards the winner receives. However, being Executed will cause the victim (and his Clan) to lose a percentage of their Gold and in some cases Battle Points in the Arena in which they were attacked. Execution against Players comes into play most during the weekly League competition. Executing other Players too often may cause you problems as those players and their friends may decide to seek revenge in the future.

Against a Boss or Arena Champion Mercy/Execution works slightly differently. In this case, Execution *does* increase the rewards you receive, but it also causes that Boss or Arena Champion to level up, so the next battle against them will be much tougher.

Arenas

An Arena is place where you can do battle with Players, NPCs or Arena Champions. Winning battles in an Arena will increase your (and your Clan's) Battle Points in that location. Once you have enough Battle Points in an Arena, you can challenge the Arena Champion. Defeating the Arena Champion will allow you to progress to the next Arena.

Opponents

Players
A Player is a real character that belongs to human user. Defeating other players grants you Exp and Gold. If the Player is in the same League as you, you'll also gain Battle Points.

NPCs
An NPC is a computer generated character, that is used as an opponent when no other Players are available. The rewards for fighting them are the same as with Players. It is not possible to view the Profile of an NPC, or interact with them in any way other than combat.

Arena Champions
Arena Champions are a special level-scaled version of the real Player who won the previous week's League competition. Defeating them will grant Gold, Exp and Battle Points, but in greater amounts compared to fighting a normal Player or NPC. Beating them will also allow you to advance to the next Arena.

Executing an Arena Champion will give you greater rewards, but will cause them to increase in Level for the next time you fight them.

Bosses
Bosses are fearsome creatures which are unlocked by defeating Arena Champions. They are normally very difficult to beat. Defeating a boss will grant you Exp, Gold and a randomly generated piece of Equipment or Rune. Executing a boss will give you greater rewards, but cause them to level up for next time.

Clans

A Clan is a group of players that work together in order help each other compete in weekly League competitions. Any Battle Points a player earns while in the Clan is added to the Clan's total in that Arena. Likewise, when a Player loses Battle Points, the Clan also loses a percentage of it's own Battle Points in that Arena.

Any player can start a Clan once they have enough Gold.

Rankings

The primary purpose of Battle Points is for competition in the weekly Rankings. The Player with the highest number of Battle Points at the end of a week will become the champion of that Arena, earn Darkstones, a random Grand Rune and unlock the relevant Artifact.

Clans also compete in their own Rankings table in each Arena. The #1 Clan in an Arena at the end of the week will become Dominant and all it's members will receive Darkstones, a Grand Rune and unlock the relevant Artifact.

At the end of a week, all Players and Clans will have their Battle Points reset, ready for the next week of competition.

Leagues

In addition to being split up by Arenas, Player Rankings are also divided by Leagues. The League that you are in is determined by your Level. Fights between players in different Leagues will result in no Battle Point gains or losses.

The Leagues are currently: Bronze (Level 1-50), Silver (Level 51-200), Gold (Level 201-400) and Blood (401+).

There is only a single League for Clans.

Character Progression

All characters in Doom Warrior have a Level, which is an easy to way to estimate how powerful they are. Every character starts out at Level 1, and gains levels by earning Exp. Once you have enough Exp for the next level, you will be given 5 stat points to distribute among the Base Stats of Strength, Toughness, Agility, Stamina and Blocking.

In Doom Warrior there is no limit to what level you can reach, so players can become as powerful as they wish.

Stats

How a character performs in combat is largely determined by their Stats. Stats determine everything about a character, for example: how much damage they do, how much life & energy they have, and how fast they attack etc. Your overall Stats are provided by a combination of your Base Stats, Equipment, Runes, Artifacts & Temporary Effects. In addition to leveling up, Base Stats can be increased by being bought for Gold from the Witch. Stats can also be temporarily increased during combat by using certain Special Abilities.

Special Abilities

Special Abilities can be granted by equipping certain Artifacts, Amulets and Helmets. Every Special Ability has a level, which determines how powerful it will be when used. Special Abilities can be made even more effective by having more Energy when initiating them, and by increasing any synergistic Stats (for example, Thunderbolt can be made more powerful by having a higher Lightning Stat).

Equipment

The main function of equipment is to increase the overall Stats and Special Abilities of the character. At any one time each character may have one of the following item combinations equipped:
  • 1 Helmet, 1 Armour, 1 Amulet, 2 Rings, 1 Two-Handed Weapon
  • 1 Helmet, 1 Armour, 1 Amulet, 2 Rings, 2 One-Handed Weapons
  • 1 Helmet, 1 Armour, 1 Amulet, 2 Rings, 1 One-Handed Weapon, 1 Shield
A character may equip any item, providing his Level is the same or greater than the Level Requirement displayed on the item.

Note that Two-handed weapons are much slower than their One-Handed counterparts, but will deal more damage and have a greater chance to break through their opponent's blocks.

Equipment can be bought for Gold at the Bazaar or Blacksmith, and can be looted by defeating Bosses.

Imbue

At the Spirit Forge you can Imbue equipment for Darkstones. This will randomly regenerate the Stats and Special Abilities on that item, but will not affect the Runes. Equipment which is Imbued can potentially have significantly higher stats than those which are bought or found.

Note that Imbuing can cause the Level Requirement of an item to increase, but this will never be higher than that of the Character buying the Imbue.

Reforge

At the Spirit Forge you can Reforge equipment for Darkstones. This simply modifies the way the piece of Equipment looks, and does not affect it's stats in any way.

Runes

Some pieces of equipment have rune sockets. A Rune is an item that can be placed inside a rune socket to make the item more powerful. Note that when a Rune is added to an item it may increase the Level Requirement of that item permanently.

Runes can be bought from the Bazaar or Blacksmith, and can be looted by defeating Bosses.

Normal Runes will carry only one Stat, but Grand Runes can have more. Grand Runes can only be earned by through winning the weekly Rankings.

Adding sockets to equipment, placing the runes and removing them can be done at the Runesmith.

Temporary Stat Boosts

Your Stats can also be increased through boosts, which only stay on your character for a limited time (usually a couple of hours). There are 3 types of boost: Rested, Temple and Carnal. You can only have one boost of each type active at the same time.

Rested bonuses can be bought for Gold at the Cells, Iron Arm Inn, Altai Village or your own Lair. Temple bonuses are granted for Darkstones one of the 7 Temples in the game. Carnal boosts can be bought for Gold from Slave Girls.

Slave Girls

Slave Girls can grant you a Carnal Stat boost for Gold by visiting the Den of Vice. If you have a Lair you can also buy Slave Girls to keep them permanently in your Hareem. The price to bed a Slave Girl from your Hareem is far lower than renting them from the Den of Vice, and allows you to keep girls with the best Stats.

Artifacts

Artifacts are special item which grant Stat increases in a similar way to equipment. Each Character may have one Artifact selected at a given time. In order to unlock an Artifact you must complete the task listed, for example "Execute 10 Opponents". Most stats granted from Artifacts automatically increase with your Level, making them very valuable indeed.
